Join CTU at Feb 4th Rally Against Mass Layoffs

February 2, 2016 0 comments

It's time to show our strength.

VIA CTU Facebook Event Page:

CPS has done it. As expected, they have announced layoffs of 1,000 or more educators in a letter sent today to the CTU. They also said that they would take 7% of our pay through the pension pickup within 30 days and redirect anti-poverty funds to general expenses.

The union spent fifteen months trying to get a serious offer out of the Board. After only three weeks of negotiations, CPS made an offer that (1) relied on a reduction of more than 2,000 educators from the system, (2) made no provision against ballooning class sizes as a result, and (3) included nothing but the vaguest indicators of where new revenue will be pursued.

The mayor has had every opportunity to pursue revenue from his wealthy friends and backers. Instead he has targeted educators and students to pay for the Board’s mismanagement. CPS has shot down the flag of truce and peace talks are over. It is time for Chicago’s educators and public school supporters to take off the gloves and head out to the streets.

We will start the march at Bank of America at 135 South Lasalle and finishing at City Hall. Please note: THIS WILL BE A NONVIOLENT AND SAFE RALLY! Attending the rally will not put you at risk of arrest or sanction.

Rally for a Just Chicago Tues. June 9 5:00 at the State of IL Building

June 3, 2015 0 comments

Rally to Support CTU Contract Demands and for
A Just Chicago!

Tuesday, June 9
5:00 - 6:30 PM
Thompson Center (State of Illinois Bldg)
Clark St. & Randolph St.

Stand with our CTU sisters and brothers! TSJers! Come out to the rally to support CTU's contract demands (click here), which are demands for a just Chicago and just education for CPS students.

Remember-Teachers' working conditions are students' learning conditions.

The below is from the CTU:

CPS is broke on purpose. For decades, politicians have diverted taxpayer money intended for Chicago's public schools to fund their pet projects. Now that the system is "broke," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and CPS interim CEO Jesse Ruiz think that teachers-and the parents of CPS learners- should expect and accept less.

As teachers, we stand for quality public education because every teacher wants to be an effective teacher. As the Chicago Teachers Union, we are bargaining with the city to renew our contract that expires June 30.

We ask for your support as we demand smaller class sizes, school libraries and art classes, and in-school counselors. We want to protect teachers' pensions so the profession will continue to attract and retain the best and brightest.

We ask you to stand with us as we fight for a quality education for every Chicago kid and a quality workplace for every Chicago teacher.

Milwaukee Schools Under Attack-Need Our Help!

September 16, 2013 0 comments

Come to Milwaukee w/ TSJ for a March and Rally Saturday Sept 21-Public Education is a Civil Right!

logo
Milwaukee public school educators, parents, and students need your help. The assault on public schools is increasing in Milwaukee.  We have called for Public Education is a Civil Rights March and Rally for Saturday, September 21 in response.

We hope that you can join us to demonstrate to the entire state that we are united in our demand that public education be supported, not abandoned.

IF YOU WANT TO COME WITH US, EMAIL Jessica of TSJ, we will leave Saturday AM and return that afternoon-we will either be on a bus w/ CTU and/or car pooling. WEAR YOUR TSJ T-SHIRT!!!

The most recent attack on public schools in Milwaukee has come in the form of a proposal from the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce that would create a New Orleans's style "recovery zone" in Milwaukee. Dozens of "low performing" schools would be removed from the democratic control of the school board, and placed in a new school district or zone that has an appointed superintendent. That superintendent would then turn those public schools over to privately-run charter schools. This is essentially what happened in New Orleans -- all the teachers were fired in that district as part of the conversion. This is also happening in parts of Tennessee and Michigan.

We are asking for you to stand in solidarity with public schools in Milwaukee. For over 20 years Milwaukee has been ground zero for this assault on public education and we are drawing the line. We are saying "no more." Over 50 organizations have endorsed the march. John Stocks, NEA Executive Director is going to be joining the march and will be a speaker. We need a large turnout. We need you.

Follow these links to a flyer and list of co-sponsors

The MTEA is willing to contribute $100 to any uniserv or local or community organization from outside of Milwaukee to defray cost of a rented bus to come to Milwaukee. We will support the first ten bus requests that we receive.

If you have questions please contact me directly.

In Solidarity,

Bob Peterson
President, Milwaukee Teachers Education Association (and close friend of TSJ!)

Don't know about TIFs?
They're tax dollars taken from CPS for private development.
