UWM & City of Milwaukee: End Charter Enrollment Bribes!

Please sign this petition from the Milwaukee Teacher Education Association to end the practice of paying parents and community members to enroll or refer students to privately run charter schools in Wisconsin!

It has come to light this week that several Wisconsin privately-run charter schools have been using $100, $200, and gift cards to bribe parents and community members to refer and enroll children. The schools even specify that to receive a payment, the child referred must be present on Sept. 19. Attendance on this date determines the level of state funding that each school receives.
This bribery scheme to increase enrollment spits in the face of schools that are working hard to increase enrollment the old fashioned way, by providing a quality education. If you think schools shouldn't be able to artificially inflate enrollment through bribes then please sign this petition.

2. Northeast Side Regional School Discipline Summit: 
Project Nia
April 29 - 5:30 p.m.

With the release of new data from the Chicago Public Schools in February, we learned that during the last school year, 307 students were kicked out of charter schools, which have a total enrollment of about 50,000. In district-run schools, there were 182 kids expelled out of a student body of more than 353,000.

We also learned that African-American students face a higher rate of disciplinary action in the district. Last school year, approximately 75 percent of all suspensions were handed to African-Americans, a group that makes up about 41 percent of CPS' student body. (Suspended students are allowed to return to school, as opposed to students who are expelled.)

Chicago Public Schools has decided to focus on reducing the use of harsh disciplinary policies and to that end has developed a "suspension and expulsion reduction plan." CPS is seeking community input on how to best address school discipline issues.

We at Project NIA are partnering with CPS to organize a regional forum about school discipline on Tuesday April 29 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Our allies at Alternatives Inc. are hosting us for the evening at 4730 N. Sheridan Road.

4. Progressive, Democratic Education in an Era of Standardization 
The DePaul College of Education, in cooperation with Francis Parker School and the Teachers' Inquiry Project, is hosting public events to offer educators, parents, and community members opportunities to explore alternatives to high stakes testing, standardization, de-professionalization of teaching and other current "reform" approaches.
   These events are planned around the visit of faculty from Boston's Mission Hill School and the release of the film Good Morning Mission Hill.

* Thursday, April 24th from 6-9 pm at DePaul University (Lincoln Park Student Center): A forum and interactive small group discussions with Ms. Gavins and Ms. Ruggiero, with the framing question: So much discussion of education practice and policy today is centered on critique -- of high stakes testing, value-added measures for teacher evaluation, growth of charters, de-professionalization of teaching through short alternative programs, etc.  We find that our students are hungry for models, exemplars, alternatives to today's current "reform" prescriptions. Mission Hill offers one such example. What can the larger world of American education take away from one school's experience?  For more information, contact Diane Horwitz here.

Milwaukee Schools Under Attack-Need Our Help!

Milwaukee public school educators, parents, and students need your help. The assault on public schools is increasing in Milwaukee.  We have called for Public Education is a Civil Rights March and Rally for Saturday, September 21 in response. 

We hope that you can join us to demonstrate to the entire state that we are united in our demand that public education be supported, not abandoned.

IF YOU WANT TO COME WITH US, EMAIL Jessica of TSJ, we will leave Saturday AM and return that afternoon-we will either be on a bus w/ CTU and/or car pooling. WEAR YOUR TSJ T-SHIRT!!!

The most recent attack on public schools in Milwaukee has come in the form of a proposal from the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce that would create a New Orleans's style "recovery zone" in Milwaukee. Dozens of "low performing" schools would be removed from the democratic control of the school board, and placed in a new school district or zone that has an appointed superintendent. That superintendent would then turn those public schools over to privately-run charter schools. This is essentially what happened in New Orleans -- all the teachers were fired in that district as part of the conversion. This is also happening in parts of Tennessee and Michigan. 

We are asking for you to stand in solidarity with public schools in Milwaukee. For over 20 years Milwaukee has been ground zero for this assault on public education and we are drawing the line. We are saying "no more." Over 50 organizations have endorsed the march. John Stocks, NEA Executive Director is going to be joining the march and will be a speaker. We need a large turnout. We need you.

The MTEA is willing to contribute $100 to any uniserv or local or community organization from outside of Milwaukee to defray cost of a rented bus to come to Milwaukee. We will support the first ten bus requests that we receive.
