16th Annual Curriculum Fair!
Our Power is Dangerous: 
Teaching-Learning-Organizing in This Moment.

When: Saturday, Nov 18, 2017
Time: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Where: North Grand High School, 4338 W. Wabansia Ave., Chicago

All are welcome!

Get involved in TSJ and help plan and organize the Curriculum Fair (it's an all-volunteer event!). Lots of things to do, both large and small-help with: outreach, tabling, art work, food, registration, documentation, setup, cleanup, translation, and more!

The Challenge of Teaching in a Racially and Politically Polarized Time

Our panelists will address the complex issues faced by K-12 teachers struggling to help students make sense of the current tumultuous environment: the heated rhetoric around race, immigration and xenophobia in the 2016 election, the debates around race and policing here in Chicago and throughout the country and other  controversial issues.  What are the challenges of these developments for teachers and what are the different ways that educators meet these challenges?  The panelists will address how to engage students in meaningful discussion, how to create safe classroom spaces and how to develop a mind-set of civic responsibility.

Dr. Horace Hall, Associate Professor, DePaul College of Education will present introductory remarks and moderate the panel.

Panelists include:

Liz Robbins, Social Science teacher, Lindbloom High School; Civic Instructional Specialist for Chicago Public Schools

Mario Perez, Coordinator and Social Science teacher, the Newcomer Center, Township High School District 214, Arlington Heights

Why We Say Black Lives Matter: Affirming Our Existence in Schools ITAG

New Inquiry to Action (ITAG) Opportunity! 

Please register for: Why We Say Black Lives Matter: Affirming our Existence in Schools ITAG, if interested or pass along to other networks. An ITAG is an inquiry to action group that meets around a particular concept to engage in political education with the goal of bringing together theory and action. After presenting at TSJ's 2015 Curriculum Fair, David Stovall, Stephanie Hicks and myself wanted to further that conversation beyond that space and work with educators to address anti-Black racism in schools. Participants have developed curriculums, participated in protests and formed other political study groups as part of their action piece in the ITAGS hosted by Teachers for Social Justice and NYCORE in New York. Those are just examples of the many possibilities that may develop from the space.
